For an AED to truly be a lifesaver, everyone needs to be in the know! If you’re not sure, go grab a Cuppa and say G’day to lifesaver on the wall.

TIP 1: Know Where It Lives (and Make It Accessible!)

Every second counts in an emergency. You don’t want to be scrambling to find the AED!
  • Location, Location, Location: Is your AED in a highly visible, easily accessible spot? Think reception, common areas, or main thoroughfares.
  • Clear Signage: Look for international green AED signs pointing the way.
  • Always Unlocked: Ensure it’s not behind a locked door, especially if the workplace is sometimes unsupervised.
The goal: Anyone, even a visitor, could quickly locate it in a crisis.

TIP 2: Understanding the Magic (It's Simpler Than You Think!)

Many find AEDs intimidating, but they’re designed for anyone to operate, even without prior training.

  • Voice Prompts are Your Guide: Once you open and turn on an ED, it will literally talk you through every single step – from applying pads to delivering a shock if needed.
  • It Won’t Shock Unless Necessary: A key reassurance: an AED will only deliver a shock if it detects a specific life-threatening heart rhythm. You cannot accidentally harm someone with it.

Knowing these two simple facts can empower you to act decisively. While training boosts confidence, the device itself is incredibly intuitive.

TIP 3: The Hidden Superpower: Regular Checks and Maintenance

An AED is only ready to save a life if it’s regularly checked and maintained – it’s not “set and forget”!

  • Grab a Cuppa and say G’day to your AED: Most AEDs have a visible status indicator (often a green light or tick). A quick glance each day confirms it’s ready. If you see a red light, an ‘X’, or hear beeping, it’s flagging an issue.
  • Monthly Checks: Does your specific defibrillator require a more thorough monthly check? This can include battery life, pad condition, and confirming its self-test.
  • Manufacturer Guidelines: Always follow the manufacturer’s specific recommendations for maintenance and part replacement. If an AED is used, it must be immediately restocked and assessed for readiness.

These small task makes a monumental difference!

Empower Yourself and Your Team to Be Ready When It Matters Most!

Understanding your AED, where it is, and how to keep it ready is a powerful step in workplace safety. It turns a piece of equipment into a true lifeline.
